Ribbon hair is an abnormality that is caused by the cross-section of the hair. The cross-section of hair can be oval, round or flattened. A flattened cross-section is band hair, a genetic "hair disease".

Ribbon hair cannot be conditioned or shaped, is difficult to style and can hardly be reshaped by a perm. Care and styling suitable for ribbon hair are the only aids that enable the hair to be styled in any way at all.
